Although these children are typically eager to learn, their attention spans are short. For example, the average child can sit still and attend to one single task for about ten minutes, often less. They need frequent change in pace (Kahn, 1997). * They learn best through manipulation (Kahn, 1997). * These children love to work in groups but they need a great deal of direction and assistance to complete the task (Kahn, 1997). * This age group is still impulsive and may sometimes have difficulty controlling their impulses (Kahn, 1997). * They love praise. * This age group needs repetition of instruction. They will typically focus on parts, rather than the whole (Kahn, 1997). Grade levels 3-5, ages 9 - 11 * By the age of 9, childrens attention span may be as long as 15 to 20 minutes (Kahn, 1997). * This age group also likes group work and needs less redirection than the younger group. * Fairness in everything becomes very important, including the fairness of rules (Kahn, 1997). * By age 9, the child becomes more of an independent learner, able to complete assignments (Kahn, 1997). * Children become more self-motivated during these age levels and becomes a self-starter (Kahn, 1997). Understanding these characteristics help the teacher to plan lessons. For example, a physical education lesson for 5 and 6 year-olds would not ask the children to memorize the rules of a game until the child had actually played the game.
