in a way that actually hurts them, causes bruises, and mental and physical scars. The following paper examines physical child abuse, examining what defines abuse, why people abuse children, and
many elements or perspectives concerning the overall subject of physical child abuse. Physical Child Abuse In first understanding the topic it is important to first define what constitutes physical
child abuse. In the following a report is given regarding the societys view of child abuse, and what constitutes physical child abuse: "Leaving marks seen as child abuse. A majority
(71%) do not believe spanking a disobedient two-year-old with a hand and not leaving marks is child abuse. However, in situations where marks are left, 60% believe this constitutes child
abuse, and 74% say it is child abuse when a belt is introduced to discipline the two-year-old child. -- Spanking views vary. Slightly more than half (55%) of Americans think
it is sometimes necessary to discipline a child with a good, hard spanking" (PRNewswire, 1999). While this article is a few years old, it clearly indicates that the general
population believes that spanking is allowable, although there are also likely many of those individuals who would prefer spanking were not allowed in society. Regardless, with this in mind it
seems logical to claim that spanking, without leaving marks, and done without anger but through protection and logical thinking, are acceptable and are not considered to be physical child abuse.
