Therefore, this is an important area consideration, to look at how or why there is potential benefits for schools to work with communities as well as consider the way in which the programs may be implemented to gain benefits for the community. The desire to increase health means that increased physical activity needs to be promoted as part of a healthy lifestyle choice, encouraging activities within the community. By looking at the research has identified way the schools can work with communities in order to increase health it is possible to identify potential areas where research may be applied and improve practices at many local schools and further aid health improvement. Welk (2008) notes that the role and view of physical education has changed and evolved over the years with increasing involvement expected from schools. However, the need to ensure that children gain physical activity has been presenting some form for many years, with both schools and community groups have a role to play. Some of the earliest US programs to support physical activity in children from an early were the playground programs provided in sandlots, which resulted in community based recreation (Henderson et al, 2001).
