plants obtain energy. Through a complex molecular process plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and combine this with water and the energy from the sun to produce sugar.
Sugar, alone, of course doesnt satisfy all of the plants energy needs. Sugar is, however, the basic building block from which the plants subsequently construct the higher carbohydrates,
proteins, and fats that do satisfy its requirements. It might be contended, in fact, that photosynthesis is an indispensible process in meeting the worlds energy needs as a
whole. Photosynthesis occurs not just in terrestrial systems but also in aquatic systems (Falkowski and Raven 1). It is a
three part process, one starting with the absorption of light and proceeding with the transfer of the energy from that light to reaction centers where energy is used to separate
the electrical charges composing various substances (Falkowski and Raven 33). Through photosynthesis the plant converts the energy from the sun into vital components that it needs to exist and
it produces biomass upon which other animals feed. When this biomass returns to the soil at the plants death the soil itself is nutrified. In effect, the plant
is converting carbon dioxide back into organic carbon compounds and this is an incredibly important aspect of photosynthesis (Morton 10). This cannot be accomplished except by living organisms and
in the majority of cases, 99.9 percent of the time in fact, it is plants that are responsible (Morton 10).
Photosynthesis, of course, is an incredibly complex process and the specifics of its outcome depend on a variety of factors. There are several limiting factors, for example,
