scientists began to recognize that plants absorb much of their energy from the air itself. Joseph Priestly was the first to recognize that plants absorb something from the air
and, in turn, contribute something. Even with that recognition, however, it was not understood that the sun played a role in this process as well. Another researcher,
Jan Ingenhousz, was working independently but concurrently with Priestly. Ingenhousz recognized the role of the sun in this process. It
took many more years and much more work before scientists finally understood the basic elements of photosynthesis. Scientists recognized that plants were absorbing carbon dioxide and that this was
combined with water and the energy from the suns rays to produce sugar. Sugar is then used to synthesize higher carbohydrates, proteins, and fats all of which are vital
nutrients to the plant. Through photosynthesis the plant converts the energy from the sun into vital components that it needs to
exist and it produces biomass upon which other animals feed. When this biomass returns to the soil at the plants death the soil itself is nutrified.
There are several limiting factors that influence photosynthesis and its effect in the plant. Potassium, for example, is critical in assimilating the energy
produced during photosynthesis. Iron and copper work in the production of chlorophyll while manganese enhances nitrogen absorption and zinc is a component of the energy transference process. Rubisco
is another limiting factor. Rubisco is critical to plant growth. An enzyme, this substance is found in the leaves of
