culture the most powerful social force on earth, as it controls all other social forces. However, culture is also somewhat ambiguous and subjective by nature; it can be rather difficult to define. For example, if one were to be asked what the culture of ancient China was like, one could only truly respond in a secondhand manner, giving historical facts about the conditions of living in ancient China. This, of course, is not a true experience of culture, even if it does provide us with some vicarious sense of what living in such a culture might have felt like. Apart from historic fact, however, there is another way by which inferences about culture can be derived. Art has historically served as the vehicle of culture; even if it can be argued that this is not decisively the teleological function of art as a whole, it cannot be denied that a particular image of culture, a zeitgeist of sorts, is inevitably expressed in any artistic creation. Therefore, documents such as paintings, books, and photographs from ancient cultures can often provide one with a more direct glimpse into the realities of those cultures than could any list of historic facts, no matter how large. Interestingly enough, it is also the case that the artistic documentation of culture also serves as the instrument through which culture is most frequently transmitted. This manifests in a cyclical manner, in which, by way of example, a songwriter is inspired by the culture in which he lives to write a song, features of that culture are inevitably expressed in the song he writes, and then that song becomes a part of the contemporary culture, adding to its definition and influencing, however subtly, its future course.
