The company has lost some market share but appears to be creating value for the shareholders and is in second place when it comes to making profit. The company has many opportunities, including increasing market segments and potential value creation though the value chain, as well as facing threats in the future from the existing competition. 1. Introduction To understand a company and the way it can compete the company needs to be understood in terms of the context within which it operates. There are a range of tools which can be used to examine the Macro and Micro environment. In this paper we are examining the hypothetical Phoenix company, manufacturing and selling bikes. 2. PESTEL Analysis Political influences The industry we are looking at has a range of political influences. The first must be seen as the level of protectionist policies that have been put in place. The government has set up the current situation with a range of moves that have created the current competitive structure. There was the initial policy of setting up five different bike companies, all compeering by making the same bikes and all having the same start. This may be seen as a policy to encourage competition, allowing the industry to develop and become efficient. The policy was supported with the banning of imports except in one area, the small cheap computer bikes which were provided at a low cost from third world countries. These bikes were allowed in as they were not produced by the new companies.
