and Emily Grierson from 'A Rose for Emily,' by William Faulkner. Both of these women
are generally misunderstood and seen as outsiders to the rest of the society within the
town they visit or are somehow a part of. They are looked at and seen as mysteries to their
individual society. They were also women that, for one reason or another, were mentally
unstable to one degree or another.

their town. Jackson lives far outside town, but when she comes to town people stare and generally misunderstand who she is. Emily lives somewhat within the boundaries of her town,
yet might as well live as far out as Jackson, for she is equally misunderstood in her uniqueness. It doesnt matter that one of these women, Emily, is essentially White,
rich and well bred, and that the other is poor and Black, for they are both seen as strange women who do not fit into the confines of the society
they live in. Jackson is an old woman, which Emily is in the end of her tale. Jackson is a poor Black woman who is seen walking a long and
arduous road into town in the dead of winter. No one really understands why an old woman would do such a thing. No one in town can conceive of what
put this woman in a position where she, at her age, must go into town on foot, for a member of her family. And the medical community, who knew of
the condition of her grandson, did nothing to help her, yet still wondered why she would make the trek to obtain medication. They did not try to respect her or
help her, indicating they merely thought she was odd. No one bothered to try to understand her necessarily, though they felt for her. In addition, she was perhaps not
altogether there in her mental stability. We see her having hallucinations and we hear her talking to animals. In the following we see one of her hallucinations: "But she sat
down to rest... She did not dare to close her eyes and when a little boy brought her a plate with a slice of marble-cake on it she spoke to
