or another. In many cases these phobias, as they relate to social phobias, are often treated with drugs. However, there are many phobias that cannot necessarily be treated by any
drug, and they require special approaches if an individual wishes to rid themselves of a phobia. Of course, there are phobias that cause people little or no problems because the
person rarely if ever has to come in contact with their phobia. For example, someone who lives on a farm and never goes to a city may have a phobia
of elevators and yet they may never find themselves in a position where they have to use one. With these simple realities in mind the following paper first examines and
defines phobias and then moves on to examining one of the most common phobias possessed by adults: aeroacrophobia which is the term generally given to the fear of flying.
Phobias Phobias are generally considered to be the irrational fear of one thing or another. It is considered to be a psychiatric disorder and can and does include anxiety
disorders. Such disorders can vary a great deal in the degree to which the individual fears or experiences them. In fact, many phobias rarely cause people serious problems: "As Emory
University psychiatrist Charles Nemeroff puts it, Very few people actually seek treatment for them. Its not as if people who are terrified of snakes come into my office because it
is the only thing standing in the way of a career as a herpetologist" (Szegedy-Maszak, 2004; 66). There are phobias which can ultimately control a persons life, however, such
