employees naturally dislike work or taking responsibility and must be compelled by managers to do their jobs. This negative view, while outmoded, nevertheless persists in the form of managers who
feel compelled to use an authoritarian style. Contrasting authoritarianism is a management style that views employees as intrinsically motivated and committed to doing their best. By taking such a positive
view of human nature, a healthcare manager automatically conveys respect for employees, as well as the expectation that they desire to continue to grow in their professional skills so that
they can continue to deliver a high level of care to the people they serve. When a manager tries to harbor all responsibility within the confines of that managers
position, it conveys the message that the manager does not consider employees capable of making informed decisions on their own. It says to employees that the manager does not feel
that they are capable of handling responsibility on their own and that they should simply follow orders. This sets up problematic situations on a number of levels, which have to
do with expectancy. First of all, there are the expectations of the manager. It is easy to understand why some managers feel that their negative attitudes towards employees are
justified. As they expect to see signs of slothfulness and unprofessional conduct, this is precisely what they find. Their expectations, in other words, generate a self-perpetuating cycle, as employees will
lose confidence in their own abilities due to the managers negative gaze, which perpetuates more mistakes and verifies to the manger that the employees need constant, authoritarian supervision. In other
words, the negative expectations of the manager become a self-fulfilling prophecy. On the other hand, the manager who expects employees to handle responsibility in a professional manner, who sets high
