Definition of Classroom Management A variety of educational theorists have related possible definitions of classroom management. Wong and Wong (2005) argue that: "classroom management refers to all the things that a teacher does to organize students, space, time and materials so that student learning can take place." These researchers further argue that the concept of classroom management includes the things that a teacher does: ""1. To foster student involvement and cooperation in all classroom activities and 2. To establish a productive working environment" (Wong and Wong, 2005). Classroom management can be described as an equitable, objective and ethical treatment of students in the classroom setting of any educational institution. Within the scope of classroom management, though, there is also a need to consider the nature of the educator, and the role of the educator as a facilitator for learning. Educators who are successful in classroom management, then, are often positive, prepared and well-organized. The educator who is successful in classroom management general demonstrates a level of expertise and a passion or love of their subject matter and a desire to motivate students. Problematic Behaviors Problematic behaviors are actions by students that are disruptive to the educational process. Problematic behaviors are not always problematic outside of the classroom setting, but when students participate in these actions during classroom time, they take time away from the educational process, reduce the focus of the educator, and can transform the learning environment.
