Philosophy and the Basic Element Research Compiled By Susan A. Nelson - September 2001 -- For more information on
using this paper properly! In its purest form philosophy is the love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means. The word
"philosophy" comes from the Greek "philosofia" which translates to mean " the love of wisdom." However, prior to philosophy poetry was the primary source of intellectual stimulation and education
among the Greeks, especially as is evidenced by the prolific/ mythical works of Homer. The early or Presocratic philosophers attempted to understand the physical world around them. In this respect
they are very much like todays scientists. Ironically, very little of the earliest philosophers work survives to this day in a direct manner.
For the most part, what is known of this time has been pieced together from accounts and writings of later philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. The earliest known
work was done by the Miletus school named for its city of origin, the Ionian City of Miletus. The Miletus school produced three philosophers that we know of: Thales, Anaximander,
and Anaximenes (Is Philosophy Possible?). However, there were a great many others who contributed to the mainstream of postulates with respect to the basic element and other core
