Without the necessary and inherent contribution of philosophy, the twenty-first century would offer no direction to the humans who look toward it in anticipation of a better world. It seems as though each century has a period of philosophical enlightenment that helps to perpetuate old yet pertinent postulations from the past. The Enlightenment of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was one where the major thinkers established themselves. What this means in terms of the manner in which philosophers looked at the broader scope of existence lies within the works produced during that period. Having both embraced and critiqued the Enlightenment, societies recognized it as a time in which all of mankind could break free from the confines of what had heretofore been accepted as a universal recognition of existence; with each individual following in the footsteps of those who went before, without any question as to why things were accomplished in any certain order, the time for the Enlightenment symbolized the chance to break free from such heretofore constraints. As a representation of the need to break free, the Enlightenment of the twenty-first century will, too, represent a philosophic movement that is instrumental in questioning what have come to be conventional social, scientific, religious and political ideas in order to make way for a new, more modernistic approach.
