CREATIONISM VS. EVOLUTION It is important for the student to understand that there exist a great many philosophies by which people live their lives. These philosophies help maintain
order and a sense of direction that otherwise would merely drift in subconscious thought, which also helps to apply a modicum of understanding to the concept of meaning. One
of these philosophies is the subject of creationism. Many people feel that creationism does not belong in science classes being taught, feeling instead that evolution is the only acceptable
theory of the beginning of life. However, creationism is not a science and therefore should not be intended as such. In religious sectors, the argument was that creationism is
the belief that God created all plants and animals, as well as the universe itself, as recounted in the Old Testament. Evolutionism is the theory that all living beings change
over time through mutation and natural selection. John Scopes was teaching that mutations in cells change the physical properties of organisms; natural selection produces the survival and reproduction of
organisms with beneficial adaptations to their environment. According to theistic evolutionism, God creates through the process of evolution (Friedman A45). Evolution is now taught in public-school science classes; however,
