The term self-hating Jew has always been a concept. There is certainly a part of the culture that seems to thrive on self-pity. Philip Roths works contain some
element of self-hatred in that respect, but it does not seem as if Roth means any harm. In fact, it appears that Roth was merely telling stories and did not
intend to disparage or upset those of his own background. He merely observed life as he knew it, and the Jewish experience was merely a part of that.
At the same time, Roth wanted people to think and not merely accept the status quo. He tried to uncover illusions and myths and
Jewish culture seemed to seep into much of what he wrote. Still, Goodbye Columbus is above all about class and gender as exemplified by Brendas behavior. She happens to be
Jewish, but she could have been anything else. Some might disagree with that notion and equate her with the stereotypical Jewish American Princess. Brenda is both wealthy and domineering. Certainly
one sees the two as inextricable. However, if Brenda were a poor Jew, would she be so bold? In some respects it is not her Jewishness that creates the selfish,
uncaring Brenda-monster who cares little of others feelings, but the money. Although most Jews do not equate money with the culture, there are
those who are prejudiced and stereotype Jews as having great wealth. This is true despite the large number of Jewish people who are poor or middle class. Yet, bigoted groups
