relates Ramirezs story using an omniscient point of view that fills the reader in on the thoughts and feelings of all the participants in this twentieth-century nightmare. Carlo, uniformly and consistently, allows the facts of the story to speak for themselves. He doesnt postulate as to what may or may not have caused Ramirez to grow-up to be a charismatic and totally ruthless killer; however, by his inclusions of certain facts he leads to the reader to certain conclusions. According to these details, which are included in Carlos narrative, one can only assume that the brutality and lack of conscious exhibited by Ramirez resulted from childhood experiences that traumatized his developing psyche and bent it into an unholy shape. Carlo begins by letting the reader know what Ramirez was thinking during his first murder. After his conviction, Ramirez was quite frank in talking about his crimes, so one can assume that this rendition of his thoughts and feelings are accurate. As Carlo relates the subsequent murders and how the police investigation slowly closed in to capture Ramirez, he builds up a detailed psychological picture of this darkly handsome and ruthless murderer. Ramirez was, and is, a complete sociopath. He has no conscious. Yet, incongruously he demonstrated that he can act with compassion towards his family and he loves his sister dearly. It would be easy to write Ramirez off as a modern-day monster if it werent for Carlos section on Ramirezs childhood in which he relates the Ramirez family history. Ramirezs father, Julian, was raised in Mexico by a father who used to regularly tie him to a tree and beat him until his body was a mass of bruises.
