quality is essential to an organizations success. He also believed that quality was a management responsibility and should not be relegated to a quality control department. This paper discusses his
life and contributions, and delves more deeply into his philosophy. Discussion Philip Crosby was born in 1926 in Wheeling, West Virginia, to a family whose members were almost all involved
in the medical profession; it was thought he would follow their lead (Biography). He served in both World War II and Korea and attended medical school in between (Biography). Somehow,
he took a different path and wound up at various companies instead: he worked for Crosley (a car company, now out of business) from 1952-1955; then for Bendix Mishawaka from
1955 to 1957; he then went to Martin-Marietta from 1957-1965 (Biography). (Martin-Marietta is probably best known for its work in the aerospace industry). In 1964, Crosby "received the Distinguished Civilian
Service Medal from the Department of the Army" for his development of the "Zero Defects" concept (Biography). He established his own consulting firm in 1979; although Crosby died in 2001,
the firm is still in business (Biography). The company is called Philip Crosby Associates, and by 1989 it had grown into a "publicly traded organization with 300 employees around the
