properly! The race to see who would replace Ed Rendell as mayor of Philadelphia in 1999 was a hotly contested one. In many ways an election campaign is like a sporting arena. The various candidates circle one another, checking for weaknesses and for areas where they can shine. However, choose wrongly and it can quickly put that particular candidate out of the race. For example, the Pennsylvania state boxing commissioner, George Bochetto, declared his candidacy for the mayoral seat early and quickly announced that if he was elected mayor of Philadelphia in 99, hed do away with the much-hated wage tax by 2008 (Greenberg 42). Bochetto, furthermore, stated that he would do this "so that the jobs, people and solid tax base that the wage tax has driven away may return" (Greenberg 42). However, while this move was calculated to strengthen his appeal, even a quick look at the financial situation of this city shows that Bochetto did not adequately do his homework. In fact, experts in that region state that because of this "wild stab" at winning support, Bochetto was quickly relegated to the role of "non-contender" in many peoples minds (Greenberg 42). By killing this tax, Bochetto would deny Philadelphia its largest source of revenue, which is a fact that is well known to the business community and something that they would never support (Greenberg 42). This shows, however, how important it is that candidates demonstrate that he or she has an accurate image of all aspects of the citys operation. The over-all situation of Philadelphia is much improved thanks to the its outgoing mayor, Ed Rendell.
