diaphragm. There may be more than one tumor present and "The tumor produces large amounts of a substance that causes an increase in blood pressure. The high blood pressure
can cause strokes, sudden death, heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythm, or heart failure" (Warkentin, 2001; 1499). Interestingly enough, however, this is one of the few causes of high blood pressure
that can successfully be treated and cured. In terms of the symptoms we note that some people actually have no symptoms at all. The following symptoms, however, may
indicate an individual has pheochromocytoma: high "blood pressure, headache, racing heart rate, irregular heartbeat, sweating spells...flushing, nausea and vomiting, anxiety, numbness and tingling of the arms and legs, fatigue" (Warkentin,
2001; 1499). A doctor may suspect an individual has this condition if they are young and quickly develop high blood pressure, if there is a family history of this type
of tumor, if the high blood pressure is accompanied by new or increasingly bad diabetes, or they "develop huge swings in blood pressure levels with medications or anesthesia" (Warkentin, 2001;
1499). The condition is diagnosed through testing. The doctor will test "blood and urine for abnormal amounts of the substance produced by the tumor. You may need to give
samples of blood and urine on different days" (Warkentin, 2001; 1499). If the tests come back positive a CT will be performed, or an MRI, in order to assist the
