to compensation strategy. There are many ways in which employees may be motivated, this is not only in terms of salary, otherwise the idea of economic man would be successful,
but in terms of social man. Mayos theories based on the Hawthorn studies in the 1920s appeared to lend credibility to the view that man was not just economic, the
idea of social man was formed (Baron, 1987). Economic man model assumes man only motivation to work is money. If this were the case all that would be necessary to
gain the best employees and keep them would be to offer a good basic wage. The Hawthorn studies looked at a group of workers who were placed in
marginally improved working condition, this group of people demonstrated an increase in productivity. This started to give credence to the view that working condition have a direct impact on productivity.
However, the studies would also show that when the study group suffered a decline in working condition their productivity still improved, proving that it was the special attention the study
