interest in the future of Africa, I am seeking a doctoral degree for two overriding purposes. The first is to gain more in-depth knowledge of the intricacies of foreign
direct investment (FDI) in developing nations; the second is to achieve a position from which I can have either direct or indirect positive influence on the economic development of at
least a portion of Africa. A doctoral degree will lend both the background and credibility necessary for positively influencing decision-makers in Africa who have the power to effect positive
changes contributing to Africas economic development. Research Interests As stated, my primary interest lies in the current and future investment climate in Africa.
Of course not all of the problems of Africa can be eliminated through economic development, but economic growth could have far-reaching effect in virtually all of the countries of
Africa, particularly in the sub-Saharan region. Socialist and military forces consistently inhibit those forces that have the ability to lift the citizens of their countries out of the abject
poverty in which many of them live. Transparency Internationals annual Corruption Perceptions Index consistently lists sub-Saharan nations at or near the bottom of
the list of the nearly 150 countries surveyed each year. As example, Congo, Cote dIvoire and Angola shared in a seven-way tie for position 133 of 146 in the
2004 Corruption Perceptions Index, with Chad tied with Myanmar for the number 142 position and Nigeria winning the dubious honor of being the most corrupt African nation at the number
