He entered the "service of the church," where he would remain all his life, some time after 1326 (Sadlon, 2006). He might have been unknown to history except for
one thing: he fell hopelessly in love with a woman we know as Laura de Noves and wrote songs in praise of her (Sadlon, 2006). The love affair remained
unconsummated; she was far beyond his reach; there seems to be some doubt if she was real or not (Sadlon, 2006). But his love songs are exquisite. This
paper discusses two of Petrarchs songs and compares them with a love song of today. The Songs The first stanza says "It was on that day when the suns
ray / was darkened in pity for its Maker, / that I was captured, and did not defend myself, / because your lovely eyes had bound me, Lady" (Petrarch).
What does he mean by the suns ray being darkened in "pity for its Maker"? He first saw Laura at a mass on Good Friday; all nature, he says,
was mourning the death of Christ. He was completely captivated and didnt fight against the infatuation, which was apparently love at first sight. The second stanza is
"It did not seem to me to be a time to guard myself / against Loves blows: so I went on / confident, unsuspecting; from that, my troubles / started,
amongst the public sorrows" (Petrarch). As the crowds mourned, he discovered that he was defenseless against this love. He goes on to explain his feelings: "Love discovered
