Peter the Great, also known as Peter I, lived between 1672 and 1725. He is recognized as one of the most influential individuals of history. His accomplishments,
however, are also some of the most debatable in terms of the exact manner in which the impacted his people. Some critics contend, for example, that in seeking to
free his people he in actuality enslaved them. To others, however, this contention is myopic to say the least. To fully understand Peter the Greats accomplishments, those accomplishments
must be viewed within historical context, a historical context which in fact stretches back many generations prior to the arrival of Peter the Great on the scene. These same
accomplishments must also be viewed in respect to the way they would impact the generations of Russians who would follow Peter the Greats.
To fully understand Peter the Greats impact on Russia one must consider not only the situation he inherited (and the historical circumstances which created that situation) and the changes
felt during his reign but also the changes which would come in subsequent generations. Another critical consideration in the question of whether enslavement or emancipation resulted is the fact
that Peter the Greats reactions were both shaped and aided by another important player in Russias early history, the Orthodox Church. The situation
