Pearl Earring. The following paper examines, comparing and contrasting, two paintings that are perhaps less known in connection with these artists. The paper compares and contrasts Deposition by Peter Paul
Rubens and Christ in the House of Mary and Martha by Jan Vermeer. Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Vermeer Prior to examining the paintings it is important to understand
something about the artists, as well as their connection with the Baroque period, especially considering they were from different regions and thus involved in perhaps different types of Baroque styling.
In the case of Rubens he is considered to be "the genius of European Baroque" despite the fact he was Flemish (Borghese Gallery). One author notes how "He was truly
a European rather than a regional painter, working for rulers of Italy, France, Spain, and England as well as Flanders. As a result, his work perfectly synthesized the styles and
concepts of the South and North" (Strickland 50). In the case of Vermeer he was clearly, and strongly, a Dutch Baroque artist.
