designer" (Argument from Design). The minor premise of this argument is that evidence of design exists throughout the universe. Peter Kreeft, in his book Fundamentals of Faith, gives numerous examples to illustrate this principal. For example, say that you come upon a deserted island and find written in the sand the message "S.O.S." (Argument from Design). Your conclusion would not be that the wind or the waves had formed the message, but would conclude, rather, that it was written by a person. Kreeft makes the point that if one believes that the universe resulted from chance, such belief is founded on a series of improbably coincidences. For example, if the temperature of the Big Bang, the start of our universe, had been "a trillionth of a degree colder or hotter, the carbon molecule that is the foundation of all organize life could never have developed" (Argument from Design). The argument from design is one of the arguments for the existence of God developed by Saint Thomas Aquinas. Another of his arguments is the first-cause argument, which asserts that "Nothing just is without a reason why it is" (The First Cause). This causation argument presents the universe as the result of an interlocking chain of causation, that is, one thing causing another to come into existence. While scientists can argue persuasively that the Big Bang was the beginning of the universe, science cannot offer an explanation as to what brought about the Big Bang. God offers the only possible solution.
