upon ecological and biological systems, inasmuch as industrialism - while reflecting a tremendous economic boon - has been nothing if not disastrous to the environment. Big business was a
saving grace in the late nineteenth century; not only was it instrumental in establishing an entirely new American perspective, but it was also the beginning of a new prosperity.
While not everyone was fortunate enough to benefit from such a boon - as is the case with any sort of social improvement - the vast majority was able to
bask in the up-and-coming influences brought about by big business. At the same time, however, big business was ultimately responsible for encounters that were neither anticipated nor appropriately handled,
with the use of broad-spectrum pesticides in large-scale farming representing one of the most detrimental impacts on wildlife. These changing times were far
too exciting for people to be distracted by the damage that was being done toward wildlife on account of pesticide residue as it was spread all over crops and adjacent
animal habitat, which ultimately permeated into the soil and water supplies. This activity ultimately caused people to call "for environmental awareness as part of social responsibility" (Bovet 30) with
regard to this wanton destruction in the name of spot-free apples and wormless tomatoes. Coral reef damage and desecration reflects some of the most critical of all detrimental impact facing
