vaccinate them. Results are highly valuable to medical practitioners when either recommending or advising against this vaccination protocol. New about this study is its connection with herd immunity,
a theory whereby those who are unvaccinated within a group who is, those individuals are still protected from the disease. This connection is made because of the growing trend
for parents to refuse many types of vaccines due to the belief that autism is the result of vaccination protocols. However, as the authors illustrate, pertussis does not seem
to be a disease that responds to this theory. The case-controlled study with randomly selected controls was conducted on 27,748 children identified as Kaiser Permanente of Colorado health plan enrollees
within an eleven-year span between 1996 and 2007. The differences between the interventions examined in the study are statistically significant when compared with the control group with 11% of
the entire study population who contracted pertussis being those children whose parents did not allow vaccinations, which equates to the unvaccinated children being twenty-three times more likely to contract the
disease than their vaccinated counterparts. These results reflect a potentially critical social problem because of the highly contagious nature of pertussis and the possibility of spreading the disease in exponential
proportions. Not only are unvaccinated children vulnerable to contracting pertussis in greater rates than those whose parents did vaccinate them, they are also responsible for needlessly spreading an infectious
disease that medical technology has been able to control. Pathogens responsible for the fast spread of infectious diseases are those that have been detected within the environment; variant changes
in conditions have rendered a great number of these pathogens adaptable to locations they otherwise would not thrive. The calculation of infectious disease is a complex maneuver that requires
