that forever affects the adopted child, the adoptive parents, siblings, and the way society perceives the family unit and its members. There are many obstacles confronting prospective parents when
they consider adoption, including genetic, racial and sexual orientation concerns. However, these are outmoded and superficial arguments at best and have no place in twenty-first century sensibilities regarding adoption.
It is a healthy and highly recommended way of providing children with loving parents, and if handled with intelligence and sensitivity, adoption can be a win/win situation for everyone
with its rewards well worth any struggles encountered along the way. Statistically speaking, there are more children adopted in the United States than anywhere else in the world (Smit,
2002). According to data published in 2002, there are approximately 1.5 million children who are currently living with adoptive parents in the United States (Smit, 2002). Each year
in America, nonrelatives adopt approximately 60,000 children, 13,000 of whom have been born outside of the United States (Smit, 2002, p. 143). These adopted children represent two percent of
all children under the age of 18 in the United States, which suggest that that adoption is more than simply a passing fad. It is a chosen way of
life for thousands of Americans who believe they possess the resources to provide children in need with a better life. It seems that since the beginning of time, or at
