which terminally ill or long-suffering patients can end their lives on their own terms peacefully and with dignity. Today, euthanasia is usually accomplished by the administration of a lethal
combination of drugs orally or by injection either by a medical professional or by the patient, or by the removal of some type of life support system. Before examining
the various issues associated with euthanasia and its legalization, some basic terms should be defined for clarification purposes. First, active euthanasia occurs when a physician administers legal medication to
the patient to end suffering (Chhibber & Chhibber, 2007). Passive euthanasia is the removal of ventilators or artificial devices that are keeping the terminal patient alive (Chhibber & Chhibber,
2007). Voluntary euthanasia takes place when the ailing patient requests a medical professional to end his or her life; when the practitioner is responsible for performing the task that
terminates life, this is active voluntary euthanasia (AVE) (Chhibber & Chhibber, 2007; Dickinson, Clark, Winslow, & Marples, 2005). Physician assisted death (PAD), also known as physician assisted suicide, occurs
when the medical professional counsels the patient on how to end life, with a lethal prescription and instructions for the patient to perform that deed (Dickinson et al., 2005).
Involuntary euthanasia occurs when there is no patient consent for the procedure, due to such reasons as patient mental incapacitation (Chhibber & Chhibber, 2007). Presently, few countries legally sanction any
practice of euthanasia. Below is a breakdown of various major countries and their legal stance regarding euthanasia and physician assisted suicide as of 2007: Country Euthanasia and
