economic conditions. In this particular novel the character of Anne is hoping that she can reconnect with a man she was once engaged to but could not marry due to his lower social/economic position. The following paper examines an excerpt from the novel which essentially helps define the foundation of the relationship and how/why the relationship will ultimately come to fruition, a passage that also helps the reader understand something of Austens attitudes towards relationships. Persuasion by Jane Austen The excerpt is actually two different small excerpts from the first chapter of the novel. In this chapter the characters are laid out for the reader, but there is also the important position of the father of Anne. His position is important because, although he is silly at times, it is his opinion that controls what happens to his daughters in relationship to love and marriage and it is his ideals that essentially serve as symbolic of the times. While Austens novels actually focus on such perspectives, Austen also utilized such perspectives to present her own opinions. Such is seen when one sees an analysis of the relationship in the following: "Eight years before the novel begins, Anne Elliot (whom Jane Austen described in one of her letters as a heroine [who] is almost too good for me) had been persuaded by an older friend of the family, whom she respects, to give up her engagement to the then-poor Captain Wentworth" (Pemberley). Austen was a writer whose characters often looked beyond the social expectations, while also adhering to the social expectations. And in Annes dismissal of the Captain she was upholding the ideals of the society, and the ideals of her father as seen in part of the excerpt ...
