that essentially involve the ethos, pathos, and logos. The following paper examines his "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and "Ive Been to the Mountaintop" in relationship to his persuasive abilities concerning
ethos, pathos, and logos, with an emphasis on ethos. Persuasion: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In "Letter from Birmingham Jail" King persuades through logos by such statements as
the following: "If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of
the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set
forth, I want to try to answer your statements in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms" (King [1]). In this King is simply, and logically, laying down
his position in an intelligent manner so that the reader can understand. He is showing himself, as well, to be an intelligent and logical man which also presents the reader
with ethos. This is clearly seen when he then states his credentials, so to speak: "I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an
organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia" (King [2]). Throughout his letter he is able to lay the foundation of his argument, through validating his
actions, his positions, and his credentials as a leader and a man of God. Through his focus on being a man of God he is also playing on the pathos
