In Shakespearian drama, the soliloquy fulfils various functions. Firstly, it allows the character to give the audience an insight as to his
or her genuine motivations and attitudes, uncoloured by the outward pretences and machinations which are demonstrated to the other characters. In Hamlet, for instance, Hamlets behaviour is designed to fool
and fox the people with whom he comes into contact; he is obliged to maintain a pretence of insanity, both to allay any suspicions which Claudius might have as to
his knowledge of Claudius crime and to provide an excuse for the times when his behaviour does slip over into the realms of the irrational. Whenever we see him interacting
with other characters, we are only shown this fa?ade - he is obscure and strange with Rosencrantz and Guildernstern, furiously angry with Gertrude, morose and philosophical with Horatio. We have
no idea what is going on in his mind, except that whatever drives him is causing him to behave unpredictably; it is only in the To be, or not to
be? soliloquy that we are allowed an insight into the extent of his grief and suicidal tendencies, and in O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I that we
see the extent of his tormenting self-castigation. The soliloquy puts the audience in the place of the characters
own mind; when Hamlet is literally talking to himself he is, in fact, talking to us, and allowing us to eavesdrop on the conversation which he has with himself. In
