death are somewhat universal they may be contained in only a handful of perspectives. Death is something that many see quite differently. There is no one
right or wrong perspective on death. People come to personal decisions. Yet, what is rather universal is that people fear death. In part, they fear the unknown. Still, Epicurus said
"where death is, I am not; where I am death is not; so we never meet?" ("death," 1995, p.178). It is a curious question. If one ceases to exist, why
should they care about anything? Of course, most people do not believe that life just stops and so there is the question as to what comes afterward. Yet, because it
is unknown, and because people fear death, one has to question the motivation and the perspective on death held by martyrs or those who are willing to die for a
cause. After all, many appear to be unconcerned about their own deaths. Also, why should they care so deeply for a cause if they will not be around to enjoy
the results of their mission? There seem to be several relevant perspectives on death. One is that it does not matter how or when one dies as there is an
afterlife and how justice will be meted out is unknown. Another perspective is that there is no afterlife and whatever is apparent on Earth is all that there is, so
