("Cognitive," 2004). The disagreement is that some scientists feel that the mind is best looked upon as something that embraces high level structures like symbols or schemas (2004). Others
take a more practical or concrete look at the mind. The problem in the discipline is that traditionally, a symbolic approach to cognitive science has been taken, but the tide
has turned. Many scientists see problems with the symbolic model. Thus, one may ask, how does the connectionist approach attempt to overcome the problems relayed by symbolism? First, what is
intelligence? What is the mind? It is an age old question. The mind is obviously more than just the brain that makes it work. Some look at the mind philosophically
and see it as attached to possibly a soul or some other thing, but others see it as something that is little more than synapses firing and making men perform
because of it. If the latter is the case, then are people not much more than robots? The popular picture of the mind that everyone has been raised on, is
somewhat akin to an intangible picture of something that thinks. Each individual mind is similar, but different in its own right. It is something like the brain or at least
it is associated with the brain, but it is not synonymous with that vital organ. One might think of it more as an energy source like one thinks of chakras
which is energy that is aligned with certain positions of the human body. In any event, the concept of mind is varied to some degree even though everyone knows what
it is conceptually. Children are taught about the mind from an early age. One hears expressions such as "Its all in your mind" or "Mind your own business." Language as
