is a film that draws the viewer into a different dimension, or world, through the experiences of several characters. Each of the characters does their part to present the story
that unfolds, narrating their perspective in one way or another and thus providing the viewer with rational and irrational experiences. The following paper examines the narrative perspectives of this classic
film. Narrative Perspectives "The Shining" is, in essence, the story of one mans journey into what appears to be madness but eventually turns out to be supernatural Jack
is the primary character in the film for it is Jack who is being controlled by the spirits that inhabit the house. However, as the viewer of the film we
primarily envision him as a villainous and cruel man. We first see him as a man without compassion, a man who is not sensitive of peoples feelings, and a man
who is unhappy as well as selfish. However, despite the fact that the story is about Jack and his troubles, it is also a film about his wife and his
son who are victims of Jack and the spirits that control Jack. It is also through Jacks wife, Wendy, and his son, Danny, that we piece together what is taking
place in the hotel. Before truly examining the narrative content in the film we look at the elements concerning the protagonist. Many may argue that the protagonist of the story
is Jack for he is clearly a victim of the spirits. He is a man who has no control over what it taking place and is led down a path
of sheer evil without his knowledge or understanding. This certainly sounds as though Jack would be the protagonist in many ways, but Jack is not a pleasant or likable character
