Divine Being, or merely an "emanation" from God, and what the distinction means for worshippers. Nature of the Holy Spirit For Christians, coming to an understanding of the nature of
the Holy Spirit is not a trivial matter; it informs both belief and worship. If the Holy Spirit is truly a Divine Being distinct from God, it (he?) should
be worshipped; if it is "simply an influence from God" it does not deserve veneration (The Personhood of the Holy Spirit). Further, if the Spirit really is a Divine
Being he is "due" our love and adoration, and by making as mistake as to his nature, we are robbing him of that (The Personhood of the Holy Spirit).
On the other hand, if the Holy Spirit is not a Being, but an emanation from God, then it is not appropriate to worship it; that would be idolatry (The
Personhood of the Holy Spirit). We might be able to make a determination by looking at the way the Bible refers to the Holy Spirit. "Some point
out that the noun for spirit in the New Testament is pneuma which is neuter and, therefore, the spirit is correctly referred to as it rather than he" (Herrick, 2005).
However, Herrick points out that in Koine Greek, there is "no connection between grammatical gender and personal gender so it is simply false to say that since the Greek
noun pneuma is neuter the spirit must be an it" (Herrick, 2005). We can turn to the Bible and its metaphors for the Spirit to see if that will help
