entirely understood by psychologists. While some experts emphasize the impact of environmental factors in shaping personality, others attribute the development of personality to innate biological factors derived from the evolutionary
process. Others believe personality is largely genetic. Whatever the case, personality is the foundation from which behavior springs, and as a discipline devoted to understanding human behavior, psychology is made
the richer by exploring the question of personality. This paper will explore two theoretical perspectives on personality development: Karen Horneys psychoanalytic social theory and Harry Sullivans interpersonal theory. This paragraph
helps the student provide a summary overview of Horneys perspective on developmental psychology. One of the most enduring of theoretical perspectives on the development of personality is the psychoanalytic social
theory set forth by Karen Horney. As the name suggests, Horneys theory derives from a foundation in Freuds theories of interpsychic conflict (Boeree, 2006). For Horney, the subconscious conflict instigated
by the repression of socially or personally unacceptable desires became the very foundations of personality, in the form of the neurosis (Boeree, 2006). Neurosis, Horney describes, is a way of
