psychoanalysis which had a strong foundation in the perception of the power of the unconscious mind. The developmental concepts Freud focus on the way on which the individual develops,
affected by the events around them manifesting in the personality and the development of that personality. Key concepts include infantile sexuality, resistance, transference, and division of the psyche into the
id, ego, and superego. This unconscious mind could be reached through free association, dream interpretation and analysis of transference and resistance can also be used to examine the unconscious.
The idea of the conscious mind and the unconscious mind were not new, however, Freud took these ideas to a new level. The idea of the conscious mind is the
mind that is aware at any particular moment in time; this includes the thoughts, feelings, fantasies memories and perceptions felt at that time (Boeree, 2001). It was the unconscious mind
which interested Freud; this included the memories that could be brought to the surface, and more importantly those aspects of the mind that cannot be brought into consciousness (Fromm, 1959).
This will mean that the majority of our minds may be inaccessible, but it is these that have influenced our development. These will include the natural drives and instincts, as
well as other influences we find too distasteful to examine, such as traumatic events (Boeree, 2001). The personality is explained as layers of different mind aspects, the conscious mind
being one of the smallest components (Fromm, 1959). It is the unconscious mind that may be seen as a root of out motivations, with motivations being seen as the drive
