schools and theoretical perspectives has been diverse over the years, that output does produce a synthetic view of personality and behavior that has advanced our understanding in considerable ways. Fundamental
to the debate, however, are what factors have the most impact upon the development of personality and the expression of behavior; one ongoing concern is whether personality is determined primarily
by genetics and evolution, and thusly something that people cannot readily control, or something generated over time, through interactions with ones environment and culture. This paper will take a look
at the evolution of personality over ones life, adopting a synthetic viewpoint that accounts for both genetic and environmental factors. First and foremost, one must look at the question of
what influences in a persons life are most responsible for producing their personality types. Germane to this question is the understanding that humans have a tendency to categorize the objects
of their study for the purposes of epistemological ease; while it may be convenient to break down different emergent patterns in personalities into "types", one must understand that doing so
is necessarily limiting, and that these "types" are simply a construction that does not map directly to the diversity of reality. That said, the common understanding of personality "types" is
that the broad type of personality one possesses is predominately affected by genetic influences, which are "ubiquitous" (Penke, Denissen, & Miller, 2007). According to the common understanding, "selective neutrality, mutation-selection
