patient rights, confidentiality forms, and release of information forms and told them to bring them back next time. The psychologist asked the parents to leave the room and administered the
MMPI A and the BSI personality assessments. The APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct states in Standard 9.03a that informed consent must obtained prior to administering any
tests to anyone (APA, 2011). It does not seem that the psychologists said anything about his preliminary interpretation of test data. Issue: Releasing information. The psychologist told the stepfather that
Jimmy did not like him, hoped he would die, and that he had started a fire in the basement. The psychologist places Jimmy in an untenable situation by making these
comments to the parents. The psychologist has not discussed the limits of confidentiality with Jimmy or the parents, thus, Jimmy would have an expectation that what he said would not
be publicized to his mom and stepfather. APA Standard 4.091 and 4.02 address this issue (APA, 2011). Standard 4.04 states psychologists may not disclose information without the consent of
the client (APA, 2011). This would be spelled out in the limits to confidentiality agreement not yet signed. These same restrictions are discussed in the American Counseling Associations Code of
Ethics in Standards B.1.b, B.1.c. and B.1.d (ACA, 2005). Goldfinger and Pomerantz (2010) point out that discussing the limits of confidentiality is crucial because most people think confidentiality is absolute.
