interaction with others. Her own reasoning cited the ever-looming potential of them dying, a blow that had devastated her when her husband died and something she would simply not
set herself up to suffer ever again. As long as she did not invest the feelings, she could not be hurt. Problems
that can be anticipated for Joan in the coming years include complete isolation as an unhealthy way to guard what was left of her broken heart. Moreover, that she
was justifying missing meals by saying she didnt need as much food at her age illustrates further emotional shutdown whereby she is failing to take care of her basic survival
needs. Even more troubling is that as she continues to slip into depression with such telltale symptoms, she stands the very real chance of being undiagnosed or untreated (Huffstetler,
