by the personalities of the people involved. The following examination of personality examines the way in which personality is defined, theoretical approaches to studying personality and analyzes factors that may
influence the personality development of individuals. Definitions of Personality Carducci (2009) points out that there are many different definitions of personality within the realm of psychological literature on personality.
He identifies three common features between these various definitions. The first of these commonalities is that all definitions personality refer in some manner to the uniqueness of an individuals personality.
This is typically expressed in terms that indicate a particular theoretical perspective, which may be oriented toward biological, dispositional, cognitive or learning factors (Carducci, 2009). The second feature of
all personality definitions is that personality psychologists tend to assume that continuity characterizes normal personality development. A degree of consistency in behavior across situations allows psychologists to link characteristics across
time as an explanation for behavior. For example, this concept ties the "competitive nature of a tennis player" to the desire of the same individual to be the "top sales
representative in his or her company" (Carducci, 2009, p. 5). The third common factor in definitions of personality relates to content and the proce3ss of personality. This refers to the
