way in which they can identify the potential killers. Hoping for some individual trait which will mark them as different from everyone else. The problem with this is that does
not appear to be any specific marker. Many of the killers may possess similar characteristics or similar backgrounds, but so will many others who do not develop into murderers. The
pattern the killers may follow after they have started in their role as serial killers may be different, but in this it may also be the fault of society in
not recognising the signs. In this there may be an element of an unwillingness to accept that someone we know is capable of that action. We may see it as
an indication of our own judgement or the difficulty with which society accepts that serial murders take place. In failing this we allow the public persona of the murderer to
prevail, usually at the cost of more lives. The first well-known documented serial killer was probably that of Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel,
London, England. This case remained unsolved, with speculation regarding the possible culprit. Rumours of a Royal or an American connection abounded, but the only community which was identified, apart from
the actual murders was the trade of the victims, all prostitutes. Although one of the most famous there is no personality we can fathom with any surety, other than he
was meticulous in his actions and appeared at some stages to try and goad the police, however the letters themselves may have been fakes.
