of the natural progression of life, and so when both take place within a short time of each other, there are deep and conflicting emotions, and perhaps a feeling that
things are somehow not taking place in their proper order. Everyone expects to have time to mourn the death of an older family member before celebrating the birth of a
new one, and if this expected sequence of events is disrupted, there is always a feeling that life is not dealing with us fairly.
For Jian Jiao, the emotional upheaval was greater because he was aware that at the
same time that his daughter was beginning her life, awaiting her birth in April 2003, his father was coming to the end of his. This would have been a difficult
time for anyone to cope with, but there had also been other life changes, such as Jian Jiaos migration to the USA from his homeland, and his separation from his
parents, which he had already had to overcome. The distance between the two countries, and his responsibilities to his wife and child and his employers, meant that he was unable
to be with his father in the last months of his life, as he would have wished. This would make him think deeply about his own life and his position
in his own family, in what was still in many ways a strange country.
