The way any individual acts and reacts will be the culmination of a plethora of factors, including values and ethics. For the business leaders values cannot fail to have an impact. A range of companies that have been started reflect the values of their leaders, an example is the Newmans Own brand, where all profits are put towards charitable causes. This is only one small example,. More apparent in everyday business may not be the purpose of an organisation, but the way in which it is run. Values will influence not only what decisions are made, but also how the are made. A good example may be the Brent Spa oil platform that was to be disposed of by Royal Dutch Shell. After many analysiss the company had decided to sink the abandoned platform at sea. This was deemed to be both the least dangerous and pose the lowest level of environment threat, it was also one of the cheaper options. Here the decision making process may have been financial, but may also have been influenced by more environment factors. The problem was that the decision process was not transparent and Greenpeace, well known at the time for its altruistic goals. Stated that although the cheapest option, the environmental damage would be great and initiated a public campaign that placed a great deal of social pressure on the company. Here there are two conflicting decisions, in the end it was Greenpeace that won, and Shell decided change its decision regarding the disposal. However this also indicates the way in which altruistic and ethical decision making may also be too short-sighted ...
