multi-cultural and multi-lingual classroom of students. These issues need to be addressed in any teaching philosophy. My teaching philosophy is based on the work and writings of many different theorists.
They teach us by non-examples how we should help students learn. For instance, Freire talked about the banking model and the problem posing model (Kidd, 2001). Loosely translated, the banking
model refers to the teacher making deposits of information and knowledge in the students mind (Kidd, 2001). In this model, the teacher is the subject and the students are the
objects (Kidd, 2001). Banking education separates the learner from both the process of education and the content of education. My teaching philosophy puts the learner first, meeting each students individual
needs as much as possible. I do not view the student as a blank slate waiting for wise words to fill his or her mind. Just the opposite, true learning
happens when the student is actively engaged in the learning process. My classroom must be one of mutual respect between the teacher and the learner. As much as Freire has
influenced my thinking, particularly with his bank education model and his discussions of the oppressed, Vygotsky has had an even greater impact on my views of learning and education. That
may be because he expressed what I believe - learning is a social event and social interaction plays in cognitive development. He stressed the importance of cultural background and cultural
experiences. Vygotsky said: "objects as cultural tools serve as carriers of meaning" (Jaworski, 1993). Vygotsky suggested that knowledge is constructed through the personal experience of an activity (Jaworski, 1993).
He promoted the idea that social interaction and social learning led to cognitive development (Riddle, 1999). We also find in Vygotskian theory the idea that a bridge must be established
