an education practicum in a local high school. I observed and interacted with a Special Educator, Sarah Smith, who had a special gift for working with children with a
variety of challenges. During the course of the day, Miss Smith provided services for children with moderate developmental disabilities, worked one-on-one with a child with significant physical needs, and
consulted with an occupational therapist (OT) on an adapted classroom plan for another child. Miss Smiths day was full of a variety of activities and her interactions with each
child was positive, focused and full of hope. Sarah Smith had a great impact on my educational focus after that time. Following graduation from Bellarmine University, I
took a job working in social services, which gave me significant insight into the problems and social differences that can influence a childs development. My work included providing direct
client services and helped me understand and respect social differences. I also referenced my experiences with Sarah Smith in the development of my own perspective on providing services, and
this helped me understand my role and determine a positive outlook for each individual situation. Though my work in social services has been challenging and rewarding, the one piece
that has gone undressed is my desire to provide direct service for children. The student should now show a connection between this fictitious educational experience and their work/focus:
