by collecting and distributing such things as school supplies and sports equipment. Helping children has also involved another passion, which is to fix things, which connects with my interest in
engineering, which is my projected major. This interest in fixing things and in helping others led to my founding of Cleats 4 Kids, which has over the last two years
collected over 100 pairs of football cleats, which were donated to young athletes. Similarly, Operation Backpack, a project that collects and donates school supplies to needy students, has also been
a focus of my life. Volunteer work and sports, while important, have never been allowed to distract me from my studies and, thus far, my academic record reflects this dedication.
What my record does not show, however, is how my dreams of competing in the sports has been sidelined by a serious leg injury. Due to the insertion of
a plate and ten screws, it may be impossible for me ever to compete at a college level. It is difficult to have ones dreams snatched away by chance. The
injury occurred late in the game, which was the state playoff game, with just two plays to go. Nevertheless, the memory of my Aunt Mimi, my godmother, who died
last year from breast cancer at just 51, keeps me going. She taught me the importance of striving towards ones dreams, over all obstacles, and this setback will not keep
me from obtaining my dream, which has long been to attend Virginia Tech. As this suggests, the importance of education is stressed in my family. My two older sisters
