changed much over the last two decades. What has changed is the way leaders lead, the specific behaviors and strategies and the notions they have embraced. As an example, servant leadership was introduced by Greenleaf in 1977 but it wasnt until the mid-1990s that organizations and authors began giving this leadership style a lot of attention (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002). Greenleaf wrote that servant leaders put the needs of others ahead of the needs for self (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002). These leaders make a conscious decision to serve others, they want to transform their followers to help them "grow healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous and more likely themselves to become servants" (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002, p. 57). The characteristics of the servant leader have been identified as "listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community" (Sendjaya and Sarros, 2002, p. 57). Most of these characteristics will be found in other lists associated with the effective leader. Others have contributed to the field of leadership with other ideas. In 1990, Stephen Covey, for instance, published a book entitled The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People, which became immensely popular. The Seven Habits are easy to understand but they are far from easy to implement in an organization. Covey subsequently released a book called The 8th Habit, which has to do with personal fulfillment and with helping others to achieve their own highest potential (Chapman, 2006). This last one seems to encompass the general principle of servant leadership. The first seven habits discussed by Covey are: be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win-win; seek first to understand and then to understand; synergize; and sharpen the saw, which is about self renewal (Chapman, 2006). ...
