student in formulating a detailed personal portrait that utilizes these models and also refers to the influences of culture, gender and ethnicity. Eriksons Model The model of personality development
formulated by psychologist Erik Erikson proposes that individuals move through a series of eight development stages, each with its own crisis, that are spread over the course of a lifetime.
Erikson wrote that each stage involves "incipient growth and awareness in a significant part function goes together with the shift instinctual energy and yet causes specific vulnerability in that part"
(Erikson, 1959, p. 56). By this, Erikson meant that an individual must successfully negotiate the crisis of a particular stage of development in order to successfully address the next crisis
(Holme, et al, 1972). For example, the first developmental crisis occurs in infancy and it encompasses the conflict between trust and mistrust. If parents (or other caregivers) respond to the
infants cries, administering to the babys needs, both emotional and physical, the child learns to trust and to see the world in a positive manner. If the babys cries are
ignored or if care is not consistent, the infant will develop mistrust, that is, fears of abandonment (Arnett, 2003). If the caregiver readily responds to the babys cries, it is
empowering for the baby, as this gives the infant some sense of control over the environment and constitutes the first step in seeing the world in an optimistic, positive perspective.
